Getting there & around
Valle de Bravo, Estado de México
Getting there
Driving from Mexico City is the usual way, roughly two and a half to three hours depending on traffic out of the city. The last stretch is a winding mountain road, scenic but slow, and not something to rush after dark. Weekend traffic both directions can add a lot of time, so leave early.
By bus, operators run from Mexico City’s Observatorio (Poniente) terminal to Valle de Bravo. Reckon on roughly three to four hours with the mountain section; it is comfortable enough but slower than driving. Buy ahead for weekends.
The nearest airport is Toluca (TLC), about an hour and a half by road, though most travelers arrive via Mexico City rather than flying into Toluca. There is no direct rail or airport shuttle worth planning around.
Getting around
The town center is compact but steep, so you cover it on foot, expect some uphill work back from the lake. Taxis are available for hops up the hill or out to Avándaro.
For the things that matter, the paragliding launch, Piedra Herrada, and outlying restaurants, you need a car or a hired taxi; they are 20 to 40 minutes out and not walkable. If you came by bus, arrange transport with your hotel or a local operator for the monarch sanctuary. Roads outside town are narrow and unlit, so keep excursions to daylight.
